Word On the Street: What Black Men Think About Your Hair

We were curious. We wanted to know what men really thought about our hair. Do they care if we add a few pieces here and there? Would they kick us to the curb if we chopped it all off on a whim? ESSENCE.com hit the streets of New York City to find out. These are their sometimes hair-raising responses. Ladies, take note or (not).

I think there is a problem if a woman never wears her own hair out, you are ashamed of or don't like your hair texture. If you only wear wigs and weaves you don't like yourself. You think that your hair is not good and that anything else is good hair

Thank you Mr. Areche! Like you, I have a thing for the neck, for a man´s neck, that is. On another note, on the tram in Basel, Switzerland, my friend and I were blessed and spellbound to see a brother sporting the most serious crafted, shoulder length locs I have ever seen. Mesmerized, I shifted my feet from my glued position, and approached him. A fantastic mahogany/ebony toned Prince with glistening eyes saluted me and I found my words...I asked in German, "Where are you from and who did your hair?" He eloquently responded in French, "I am sorry, I only speak French." I then repeated the questions in French. He answered, "My mother did my hair! I am from Senegal!" He appreciated our admiration, then exited at the next stop. I think I need to go to Senegal. Or I need to contact Diane da Costa and see if she can coax my natural to go in that direction. Essence might want to consider future photo shoots/African continent. Whew! Awesome!

There's an interesting poll about what men think about weaves, and the results seem to show that they dont like them. the poll is at For Young Black Men or 4YBM dot com

I think that there is a miosconception going on, wearing a hair weave is not a good thing or bad thing. Why is it an issue. Everyone has something fake about them, all races. How many blonds are their truly, how often do people go tanning- why is this not an issue. Noone discusses those things, I am over it and black men. You can have them.

While I have never worn a weave or wig or tracks, etc., I don't see it as a good or bad thing. If that is what you are into, then fine. Since times in Ancient Egypt, women have been changing up their hairstyles as an artform, a means of expression. If a woman opts for hair extensions or chemical processing because she wants that "good hair", then that's a different story and goes much deeper than the hair issue. By the way, that thing about Black women and their hair is not always true. Personally, I have ALWAYS loved it when a man runs his fingers through my hair!

ThatGurlD had the best comment because it is so true. Ask those men who they think are the fines celebs and I'm sure they will name someone who is rockin a weave. Plus being able to switch it up is the best part about being a black woman we can switch are looks up. A good weave does not feel like basketball shorts...whatever. I think whatever a woman feels confident with is what she should rock. These comments by the men discuss me, that's why I'm so over our men and their quest to put their petty standards on us.

These men are so full of crap! Ask them who the five most beautiful Black female celebrities are and they will start rattling off a bunch of woven women. And BTW, I have NEVER had a man say to me, "It's a shame you relax your hair!" I think they're confusing Natrural with real.

I think you should wear your hair in the manner that makes you feel most beautiful - it's your hair ladies! I got my first jeri curl in grade five and wore a big winter hat to school because I didn't want anyone to see that I wasn't "myself". Then on to stinging relaxers, smelly weaves by a girl who didn't know what she was doing. Fun braids, back to a brittle relaxer and then you know what - I cut the freaking hair off. I have been natural for years now, and it is longer, funkier, and thicker than even 5th grade. And it is cheap and easy to maintain. Love yourself and love your hair. But if your weave makes you feel good rock your weave too. peace.

After reading the comments of the men, I wonder what type of natural hair they are refering to. Mr. Abad said that he likes for his lady to wear her hair straight down—no perm, all natural. Again, he is not talking about the many black women whose natural hair is short and will most likely never grow beyond a certain point in its un-permed state. I understand that all of these men are entitled to their preferences, as we all are; the reailty is still clear. Many black men are not comfortable with black women with certain types of natural hair. In my opinion, the natural hair that most black men prefer is found on the head of Tracee Ellis Ross.

Some of yall are really upset in here lol. Be who you want to be and do what you want. At the end of the day find a man that will like you for you. Weather it's natural or not. It's not just black women that wear weaves White woman and Hispanic woman do it too. Every one has what they like. I like men with hair on their heads not bald headed lol But that's just me. I wear weaves and wigs and my hair is very healthy. I believe my hair is healthy because I wear weaves and wigs. I don't put a lot of stress on my hair. So yall don't need to be getting all hype. Is it really that serious. I love yall lol God Bless

Ruth: I kinda agree with you about men having a preference, BUT being hypocrites. Sounds like some are jealous they can't "fix" their flaws as easily as women can rock a variety of hairdos. Men like long hair, but they want it real, not weave. However, if it comes down to just hair, then these men are really too superficial & would rather have a dumbheaded woman with long hair than a good woman who looks good too even with a weave.

I agree natural is the most beautiful of all, but it is difficult to locate a female who is even fifty percent natural. It is just overwhelmingly rare these days.
